UW WBB Huskies Need Big Help Scoring in the Paint: Our Favorite Transfer Portal Targets

UW WBB Huskies Need Big Help Scoring in the Paint: Our Favorite Transfer Portal Targets

Washington Women’s Basketball Faces a Defining Portal Moment — UW’s Frontcourt is the Epicenter

Washington’s 2025–26 season ended with a heartbreak but clarifying truth: the Huskies simply didn’t have enough interior firepower to survive deep into March. Their second‑round NCAA Tournament loss to TCU laid the problem bare.

The TCU Horned Frogs dominated the paint 42–18, converting 53.7% of their twos while Washington managed just 37.8% inside the arc. Even more telling, the Huskies finished only 7 of 15 at the rim — a 46.7% clip that made every missed layup feel like a missed opportunity.

With graduate (traditional) center Yulia Grabovskaia departing and 6’3″ freshman forward Daniella McLean (redshirt?) still raw and inexperienced, the Huskies enter the portal with an urgent need: a physical, experienced frontcourt partner who can help anchor the paint defensively, rebound, and finish efficiently at the rim.

Thus, te message heading into the offseason is unmistakable: Washington must rebuild its frontcourt, and the transfer portal will determine how fast that happens.

The Brynn McGaughy Dilemma is Actually a Big Opportunity

Freshman standout Brynn McGaughy proved she’s the future of the program, but she cannot be the only interior presence.

A 6’3″ forward with perimeter skills and long‑term WNBA upside, McGaughy isn’t built to be a back‑to‑the‑basket bruiser for 40 minutes. Forcing her into that role would stunt her development and limit Washington’s offensive versatility.

Washington’s offense provides, and Brynn McGaughy needs, the offensive freedom for her to score anywhere inside the mid-range area; as well as pop-out to the three-point line for the occasional unguarded three. The Huskies spacing is devastatingly hard to guard when McGaughy was in the lineup.

Now imagine another 6’3″ (or more) big forward that can play in tandem with McGaughy taking turns being the inside player in a 4-1 offensive set, while the other roams the mid-range or sets up at the three-point line.

The driving lanes would be huge for Sayvia Sellers, especially in the double high screen (horns) set Langley likes to run with 2 versatile big forwards setting the screens (one rolling to the basket and one popping out for the jumper) — the defense would be on ice skates. Meanwhile, Avery Howell would have two big screener options to weave around to get open behind the three-point line.

Finding an additional ten to twelve points and five to six boards per night from frontcourt production isn’t just a luxury — it’s the baseline for Washington to compete with the nation’s elite.

Why not swing for the fences on another high-impact, versatile frontcourt player before settling for a mid-impact player with the minimum production needed.

In our scenario, low post monsters like Audi Crooks (formerly Iowa State) and Grace Merkle (formerly Penn State) need not apply. — the goal is to improve paint production on both ends and maintain the spacing that makes the Huskies offense so deadly

The Dream Scenario: A Washington Star Comes Home

The most transformative addition isn’t technically a portal player — but she’s the most important name on the board.

Oliviyah Edwards (Tacoma, WA) 6’3″ incoming freshman forward, 2026 5‑star recruit, 2026 McDonald’s All‑American – Oliviyah Edwards is the kind of recruit who changes a program’s trajectory. An elite‑level athlete with shot‑blocking, rebounding, and multi‑level scoring ability, she would instantly form one of the most dynamic young frontcourts in the country alongside McGaughy.

Edwards’ commitment would be the biggest recruiting win of Tina Langley’s tenure — and arguably Washington’s most important since Kelsey Plum.

If Edwards chooses Montlake, Washington’s rebuild accelerates from “multi‑year project” to “immediate national relevance.”

A Big Impact Portal Target Who Could Start on Day One

If Edwards doesn’t land in Seattle, Washington still has high‑impact options — and the next big target would be high impact plug‑and‑play starter that would be a playing-style and culture fit.

Tilda Trygger (NC State) – Sweden native

A 6’6″ rising junior forwardTilda Trygger brings rare size paired with modern versatility: 57.6% on twos, 33.9% from three, plus seven rebounds and over a block per game. She thrives in transition and alters shots with her length — a perfect fit for Washington’s pace‑and‑space aspirations.

Either Edwards or Trygger could work in complementary tandem with Brynn McGaughy to make a formidable frontcourt — that, plus Sayvia Sellers, Avery Howell and an additional three-point shooter, could give the Huskies a powerful, elite level starting lineup.

The Next Tier: Proven, Productive, and Portal‑Ready

These players may not be five‑star phenoms or on the plus side of 6’3″, but each offers immediate, reliable production — exactly what Washington lacked this season.

  • Addy Brown (Iowa State) 6’2″ rising senior forward— A two‑time All‑Big 12 forward with 13.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, and elite passing for her size. A high‑IQ connector who raises a team’s floor.

  • Nunu Agara(Stanford) 6’2″ rising senior forward— A standout more “traditional” power forward with 15.3 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game. May be a longshot due to stated desire for more visibility in preparation for 2027 WNBA Draft.

  • Skylar Forbes (Marquette) 6’3″ rising senior forward (Ontario, CAN)— A two‑time All‑Big East selection with 15.5 points, 4.9 boards, and 1.8 blocks. Physical, skilled, and battle‑tested.

  • Achol Akot (Oklahoma State) 6’1″ rising senior forward— One of the most efficient scorers in the country at 63.3% from the field. Tough, strong, and relentless on the glass.

  • Jessica Petrie(Nebraska) 6’2″ rising senior forward — A steady, system‑friendly Aussie forward who averaged 11.3 points and 4.8 rebounds as a junior.

  • Sarah Rambus(Oregon) — 6’3″ rising senior forward A Big Ten‑ready banger who rebounds, defends, and brings toughness to the interior –not as big an upside offensively, but can probably get you 10 points and seven rebounds every night.

Each of these players would give Washington something it lacked all season: a dependable, physical presence who can finish plays and absorb defensive attention.

Why This Portal Cycle Matters More Than Most

Washington is not rebuilding from scratch — it’s building around a star. McGaughy is the kind of foundational talent who can carry a program deep into March, but only if she has the right partner beside her. The Huskies’ guards are strong, the culture is stable, and the defense is efficient and improving. What’s missing from the Huskies’ identity is the piece that every great team needs: consistent high-impact paint production and paint defense.

This portal cycle is Washington’s chance to find it.

Whether it’s a hometown phenom like Edwards, a high‑ceiling transfer like Trygger, or a proven veteran like Brown or Forbes, the Huskies have options. What they cannot afford is standing still.

Because March made one thing painfully clear: If Washington wants to rise, it must get bigger, stronger, and more efficient in the paint.

The portal window is now open…and time is short (closing April 21st).
