The Southern Jaguars (1-5) scored the first basket of the game, then watched the #22-ranked Washington Huskies (6-0) respond with an overwhelming defense that led to a “never in doubt” 66-40 home victory.
For the game, Washington shot 45.8% from the field overall (22 for 48); including 57.7% from two-point range and 31.8% from three-point range (7 for 22);
Meanwhile, Washington’s defense overwhelmed Southern’s offense, holding the Jaguars to 25.9% from the field overall; and a mere 8.3% from three-point range.
The Huskies also recorded 30 points-in-the-paint versus 20 points-in-the-paint by Southern.
UW Players of the Game: Avery Howell and Brynn McGaughy
Guard Avery Howell led the Huskies by scoring a team-leading 18 points in 26 minutes; as well as adding a team-leading three assists; plus two rebounds; two blocks; and one steal.
Howell shot 60% (6 of 10) from the field overall; including 100% on two-point attempts (3 for 3); and 42.8% from three-point range (3 for 7).
Brynn McGaughy had another strong offensive performance with 14 points in 16 minutes.
In the third quarter, McGaughy scored nine straight points during a Huskies 13–0 scoring run that extended Washington’s lead to 53–24.
McGaughy was highly efficient with 50% (4 of 8) shooting from the field overall; including, 60% from two-point range and 33% (1 for 3) from three-point range. Brynn was also perfect at the free throw line (5 for 5).
Brynn McGaughy also recorded four rebounds and three blocks.
STARTING FIVE

1st Quarter
In the first period, Southern scored the first basket, then watched as Washington went on a 19-6 scoring run.
The Huskies shot only 35.3% from the field overall (6 of 17); and 25% from three-point range (2 for 8).
Meanwhile, Southern was held to 33.3% shooting from the field overall; and 0% from three-point range (0 for 3).
The Huskies were led in scoring by Avery Howell with six points each; Teagan Brown with four points; Devon Coppinger with three points; Sienna Harvey and Hannah Stines added two points each; and Sayvia Sellers and Chloe Briggs contributed one point each.
The Dawgs held an 11-point lead to end the first period, 19-8.

2nd Quarter
In the second period, Washington increased its offensive efficiency considerably by shooting 60% (6 for 10) overall; and 40% (2 for 5) from three-point range.
The Southern Jaguars continued to struggle offensively, shooting 35.7% (5 for 14) from the field overall; and 33.3% (1 for 3) from three-point range.
The Huskies were led in scoring by Brynn McGaughy with five points; Chloe Briggs scored three points; plus Hannah Stines, Avery Howell, Sienna Harvey and Devon Coppinger added two points each.
At the half, the Huskies had built a 15-point halftime lead, 35-20, over Southern.

3rd Quarter
In the third quarter, the Huskies offense outscored Southern 18-8 in the period, including a 13-0 scoring run powered by nine points from Brynn McGaughy.
The Dawgs made 60% (6 for 10) from the field overall; despite only 25% shooting from three-point range (1 for 4).
Washington’s defense smothered the Jaguars holding them to 17.6% shooting (3 for 17) from the field overall; and 0% (0 for 4) from three-point range.
The Huskies were led in scoring by Brynn McGaughy with nine points; Avery Howell with seven points; and Sienna Harvey added two points.
The Huskies jumped out to a 25-point lead, 53-28, heading into the final period.

4th Quarter
In the final period, Washington’s scoring barely edged the Jaguars, 13 to 12, yet cruised to victory.
The Huskies shot 36.4% (4 for 11) from the field overall; and 40% shooting from three-point range (2 for 5).
Olivia Anderson led the Huskies with five points; Avery Howell added three points; Nina Cain contributed two points; and Chloe Briggs, Devon Coppinger and Sienna Harvey with one point each.
The still undefeated Dawgs (6-0) secured a 66-40 home victory over the Southern Jaguars (1-5).
