Southern University Jaguars Preview
The Southern University Jaguars hold a 1-4 record after losses to Iowa, Iowa State, Ole Miss, and UCLA; and one lone victory over Tougaloo College.
Southern’s offense averages 51.4 points per game; while the Jaguars defense allows opponents to 78.4 points per game.
The Jaguars make only 31% from the field overall; including 32.5% of their 2-point attempts; and a mere 26.4% of their three-point attempts.
The Jaguars feature only one player averaging double figures in scoring.
For the Jaguars, Zaria Hurston is averaging a team-leading 11 points per game; as well as a second-leading 4.8 rebounds per game; and a second-leading 2.0 steals per game.
Hurston is most effective scoring in-the-paint, converting 100% at the rim; but is primarily an effective mid-range scorer at 50% efficiency.

However, Hurston also makes a respectable 33% of her three-point attempts.
No other player averages double figures scoring for the Jaguars.
Jocelyn Tate is Southern’s leading rebounder at 5.8 rebounds; as well as team-leading 2.6 steals per game. Tate averages only 5.4 points per game.
Three-point specialist Jaylia Reed is Southern’s second-leading scorer at 6.6 points per game, while attempting a team-leading five three-point shots a game with 33% accuracy.
To secure the victory, the UW Huskies should dominate the Southern Jaguars by:
(1) pushing tempo offensively to score in transition (Southern’s defense is allowing almost 80 points per game) and take advantage of the Huskies roster depth and superior guard rotation to wear down Southern’s thin roster;
(2) limit the offensive opportunities of Zaria Hurston, Southern‘s top scorer (and lone double figures scorer), with multiple defenders by using aggressive and physical defensive rotations and hard closeouts;
(3) play tough and physical on-ball and off-ball pressure defense to disrupt and force turnovers by Southern (who averages 18.2 per game);
(4) dominate the offensive and defensive boards (on average Southern is outrebounded by 25 rebounds per game); and
(5) match or exceed a target of 40 or more points-in-the-paint by the Huskies.
Based on recent victories over tougher opponents, this should be an easy victory for the Washington Huskies over Southern. However, the Huskies should take care to avoid playing down to their competition and play at high level of efficiency on offense and defense.
