A tightly contested, low-scoring first half gave way to a dominating second half performance by the Washington Huskies (5-0) to defeat the (4-2) Vermont Catamounts, 71 -39.
Washington eventually broke the game open in the 3rd quarter and outscored Vermont 42-19 in the second half to assert their dominance with a 32-point home victory.
Second half scoring explosions by Sayvia Sellers (15 in the half) and Brynn McGaughy (11 points in the half) overwhelmed Vermont’s defense.
Meanwhile, the consistent presence of two Husky guards controlled the boards throughout the game, as Avery Howell grabbed 12 rebounds and Hannah Stines recorded 10 rebounds.
For the game, Washington shot 46.2% from the field overall (30 for 65); ?% on their two-point attempts (16 for 39); but only 12.5% from three-point range (6 for 17);
Fortunately, Washington’s defense smothered Vermont’s offense, holding the Catamounts to 29% from the field overall; a mere 18.2% from three-point range; and ?% on two-point attempts.
Much of this contest was fought and decided inside as the Huskies recorded 54 points-in-the-paint versus only 24 points-in-the-paint by Vermont.
UW Players of the Game: Sayviah Sellers, Brynn McGaughy and Hannah Stines
Sayviah Sellers dominated the senior-led Vermont backcourt by scoring a team-leading 22 points in 32 minutes; as well as adding a team-leading four assists; plus three rebounds; and one steal.
Sellers shot 53% (8 of 15) from the field overall; ?% from two-point range (2 for 7); and 25% from three-point range (1 for 4).
Brynn McGaughy had a breakout performance by scoring 20 points in 23 minutes.
McGaughy was highly efficient with 60% (9 of 15) shooting from the field overall — with zero three-point attempts.
Brynn McGaughy also recorded two rebounds and one block.
Guard Hannah Stines recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Stines scored 11 points in 31 minutes by shooing 62.5% (5 of 8) from the field overall; ?% from two-point range(? for ?); and 100% from three-point range (1 for 1).
Hannah Stines also recorded 10 rebounds, three assists, two steals, and one block.
STARTING FIVE
1st Quarter
In the first period, the game was close as Washington barely edged Vermont in scoring, 11 -7, thanks to a 9-0 scoring run by the Huskies early in the quarter.
Washington shot only 27.8% from the field overall (5 of 18); and went scoreless from three-point range (0 for 4).
The Huskies were led in scoring by Sayvia Sellers and Avery Howell with four points each; while Brynn McGaughy contributed three points.
The Dawgs held a 4-point lead to end the first period, 11-7.
2nd Quarter
In the second period, Washington managed another early period 9-0 scoring run to build a 20-9 lead over Vermont. However, Vermont slowly worked its way back to within single digit striking distance..
The Huskies continued to struggle offensively, shooting 38.9% (7 for 18) from the field overall; and 28.6% (2 for 7) from three-point range.
Meanwhile, Vermont’s offense shot 40% (6 for 15) from the field overall; and 33% (1 for 3) from three-point range.
The Huskies were led in scoring by Hannah Stines with seven points; Brynn McGaughy added six points; Sayvia Sellers scored three points; and Yulia Grabovskaia added two points.
After a low scoring half, the Huskies held only a 9-point halftime lead, 29-20, over Vermont.
3rd Quarter
In the third quarter, the Huskies offense took control of the game with a 13-3 scoring run, and, ultimately, Washington outscored Vermont 20-9 in the period.
The Dawgs made 50% (7 for 14) from the field overall — despite 0% shooting from three-point range (0 for 4).
Washington’s defensive intensity picked up considerably as the Catamounts were held to 23.5% shooting (4 for 17) from the field overall; and 20% (1 for 5) from three-point range.
The Huskies were led in scoring by Sayvia Sellers with 13 points; Brynn McGaughy added five points; and Hannah Stines added two points.
The Huskies jumped out to a 20-point lead, 49-29, heading into the final period.
4th Quarter
In the final period Washington’s offensive onslaught continued as UW scored 22 points versus 10 points by the Catamounts.
The red hot Huskies shot 73% (11 for 15) from the field overall; despite 0% shooting from three-point range (0 for 1).
Washington’s scoring was led by Brynn McGaughy with six points; Shayla Gilmer and Olivia Anderson added four points each; plus Sayvia Sellers, Devon Coppinger, Teagan Brown and Hannah Stines contributed two points each.
The still undefeated Dawgs (5-0) secured a 71-39 home victory over the Vermont Catamounts.
