After a tightly contested first quarter, the Washington Huskies (4-0) adjusted to handily defeat the Fresno State Bulldogs (3-2), 61-43, at home.
Turnovers dominated the contest as the Dawgs forced 28 turnovers by Fresno State and generated 20 points from those turnovers; meanwhile, the Huskies committed a season high 20 turnovers.
Washington shot 35.3% from three-point range (6 for 17); 39.3% from the field overall (22 for 56); and 41.0% on their two-point attempts (16 for 39).
Fortunately, Washington’s defense kept Fresno State’s offense under wraps all night, holding the Bulldogs to 28.6% from three point range; 34.6% from the field overall; and 35.6% on two-point attempts.
Much of this contest was fought and decided inside as UW recorded 32 points-in-the-paint versus 26 points-in-the-paint by Fresno State.
UW Players of the Game: Sayviah Sellers and Avery Howell
Sayviah Sellers was the catalyst for the Huskies offense by scoring a team-leading 14 points in 28 minutes; as well as adding a team-leading eight assists; plus four rebounds; three blocks; and three steals.
Sellers shot 41.7% (5 of 12) from the field overall; 42.9% from two-point range(2 for 7); and 40% from three-point range (2 for 5).
Avery Howell had an offensive resurgence, also scoring a team-leading 14 points in 26 minutes.
However, Howell did not have her trademark offensive efficiency with 41.7% (5 of 12) shooting from the field overall; 50% from two-point range(4 for 8); and 25% from three-point range (1 for 4).
Avery Howell did contribute with her all-around play, recording six rebounds, two steals, and one assist.
STARTING FIVE
1st Quarter
In the first period, the game was close as Fresno State tried to set the tone with almost frenzied defensive play that resulted in very low scoring for both teams.
Washington shot only 25% from the field overall (3 of 12); and made one three pointer for a 33% from deep (1 for 3).
The Huskies were led by Sayvia Sellers with five points; Avery Howell added three points; while Sienna Harvey and Yulia Grabovskaia contributed two points each.
The Huskies were locked in a 7-7 tie with the Bulldogs with 3:50 left in the quarter, then the Dawgs outscored the Bulldogs 5 to 1 to take a 12-8 lead to end the first period.
2nd Quarter
In the second period, Washington’s offense surged to outscore Fresno State, 25-12.
Powered by more balanced scoring, the Huskies shot 62.5% (10 for 16) from the field overall; and 57.1% (4 for 7) shooting from three-point range.
The Huskies defense also improved and held Fresno State’s offense to only 42.9% (6 for 14) shooting from the field overall; and 0% (0 for 2) from three.
The Huskies were led by Sienna Harvey’s seven points; Avery Howell added six points; Sayvia Sellers added five points; Chloe Briggs scored three points; plus Teagan Brown and Yulia Grabovskaia added two points.
Heading into halftime, the Huskies had seized control with a 17-point lead, 37-20, over Fresno State.
3rd Quarter
In the third quarter, the Huskies offense cooled but still managed to outscore Fresno State, 17-9.
The Dawgs made 46.7% (7 for 15) from the field overall; and only 20% from three-point range (1 for 5).
But Washington’s defense held the Bulldogs in check with 23.5% shooting (4 for 17) from the field overall; and 0% (0 for 1) from three-point range.
Washington was led in scoring by Devon Coppinger with five points; Sayvia Sellers and Hannah Stines scored four points each; while Chloe Briggs and Avery Howell added two points each.
The Huskies were able to build a 54-29 lead heading into the final period.
4th Quarter
The final period saw Washington outscored 14-7 by the Bulldogs, as the Huskies bench failed to maintain tight control of the game resulting in UW’s starters being subbed back in to closeout the contest.
The Huskies shot a shot a mere 15.4% (2 for 13) from the field overall; and only 0% shooting from three-point range (0 for 2).
In the fourth period, Washington was led by Avery Howell and Devon Coppinger with three points each; plus Chloe Briggs scored one point.
Thus, the still undefeated Dawgs secured a 61-43 home victory over the the Fresno State Bulldogs.
