Despite a somewhat uneven performance, the Washington Huskies (2-0) dominated the Montana Grizzlies (1-2), 87-56, in a home blowout victory at Hec Ed on Monday night, mostly with the intensity of their defensive effort.
The Dawgs shot 33% from three-point range (7 for 21); 46% from the field overall (34 for 74); and 50.9% on two-point attempts (27 for 53).
UW recorded 50 points in-the-paint versus only 8 points by Montana.
Washington’s defense kept the Montana offense sputtering all night, holding the Grizzlies to 29% from the field overall; although the Huskies did allow the Grizzlies to make 32.5 % from three-point range; and only 22.7% on two-point attempts.
Washington only forced 10 Montana turnovers, while the Huskies committed 8 turnovers.
UW Players of the Game: Sayviah Sellers, Yulia Grabovskaia and Brynn McGaughy
In 18 minutes of playing time, Sayviah Sellers led the Huskies with 19 points by shooting 61.5% from the field overall (8-13); 71.4% from two-point range(5 for 7); and 50% from three-point range (3 for 6).
Sellers also recorded five assists.
In 17 minutes of playing time, Yulia Grabovskaia was a dominant force inside, scoring 14 points by shooting 85.7% from the field overall (6 for 7) — all from inside the lane.
Grabovskaia also recorded eight rebounds, 3 assists and one steal.
In 17 minutes of playing time, freshman Brynn McGaughy made a statement by scoring 12 points by shooting 57% from the field overall (4 for 7).
McGaughy also recorded five rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal.
1st Quarter
In the first period, the Huskies offense made 47.4% from the field overall (9 of 19) and 50% (2 for 4) from three-point range.
The Huskies were led by Sayvia Sellers with nine points; Yulia Grabovskaia with four points; Avery Howell and Brynn McGaughy with three points each; plus Teagan Brown contributed two points.
Meanwhile, the Huskies defense stifled Montana’s offense early on, as the Grizzlies managed only 10 points on 26.7% shooting overall (4 for 15) and 25% (2 for 8) from three-point range.
The Huskies held an 11-point lead to end the first period, 21-10.
2nd Quarter
In the second period, the Huskies outscored the Grizzlies, 21-9.
However, Washington’s offense struggled as UW shot only 35.3% (6-17) from the field overall; and 0% (0 for 3) from three-point range.
Meanwhile, Montana’s offense was inept — shooting 13.3% (2 for 15) shooting from the field overall; and 20% (2 for 10) shooting from three-point range.
The Huskies were led by Brynn McGaughy with seven points; Yulia Grabovskaia with four points; plus Avery Howell, Sienna Harvey, Devon Coppinger, Teagan Brown and Hannah Stines added two points each.
Heading into halftime, the Huskies led by 23 points, 42-19.
3rd Quarter
In the third quarter, the Dawgs exploded for 25 points on 52.6% (10 for 19) shooting overall and 33.3% from three-point range (1 for 3).
Seattle scored 13 points in the third quarter, on 35.7% shooting overall (5 for 14) and 50% from three-point range (3-6).
Washington was led in scoring by Sayvia Sellers with 10 points; Sienna Harvey and Yulia Grabovskaia added four points each; Devon Coppinger added three points; and Teagan Brown and Brynn McGaughy added two points each.
The Huskies extended their lead to 29 points heading into the final period, 67-38.
4th Quarter
In the final period, the Huskies barely edged the Grizzlies in scoring, 20-18, as they seemed to let up defensively.
However, the Huskies still cruised to victory while only shooting 47.4% (9 for 19) from the field overall; and 25% shooting from three-point range (2 for 8).
In the fourth period, Washington was led by Chloe Briggs with five points; Devon Coppinger and Hannah Stines added four points each; Sienna Harvey added three points; and Olivia Anderson and Yulia Grabovskaia added two points each.
The Dawgs posted a 87-56 victory in front of their home crowd.
