The Washington Huskies (14-9, 5-6 B1G) host the #16-ranked Maryland Terrapins (18-5, 8-4 B1G), on Sunday, February 9th @ 1PM (also on the B1G + Network).

Washington is currently averaging 72.9 points per game.

The Huskies are shooting 36.5% on three-pointers overall; 32.6% on straightaway threes; and excellent 45% on corner threes.

The Dawgs continue their high efficiency at-the-rim (within 4.5 feet) at 69.7% efficiency.

Washington’s scoring is now led by four players averaging over 10 points per game: junior guard Elle Ladine (15.7 points per game); sophomore guard Sayvia Sellers (averaging 15.5 ppg); 6’4″ forward Dalayah Daniels is contributing 11.3 points per game; and junior guard Hannah Stines (10.1 points per game).

Maryland Terrapins

The Maryland Terrapins average 79.9 points per game.

Maryland shoots 34.4% on three-pointers overall; 33.4% on straightaway threes; and 39.7% on corner threes.

Maryland makes 61% of their attempts at-the-rim (329 for 539).

The Terrapins are also 43.4% effective from further away inside-the-paint (5 feet or more).

Maryland shoots only 37.4% from the mid-range area (76 for 203 attempts).

The Maryland Terrapins have four players averaging 10 points or more.

Kaylene Smikle a 6″0′ junior guard, is the Terrapins leading scorer, averaging a team-leading 17.5 points per game; along with 4.1 rebounds; 1.6 assists; and 1.6 steals.

Smikle is an excellent three point shooter overall (37.3% on 31 for 83 attempts), including 46.2% on corner three-pointers (limited attempts).

Smikle is a decent finisher at the rim, making 58.6% of shots within 4.5 feet; as well as from further away in the lane (40.9%).

Shyanne Sellers, a 6’2″ freshman guard, averages 13.3 points per game; along with 4.3 assists; 3.9 rebounds; and 1.0 steals.

Sellers is a three level scorer: shooting a scorching 41.2% from three-point range overall; a 63.6% finisher at the rim (within 4.5 feet); 48% further away in-the-paint (beyond five feet); and a good mid-range scorer (42.4%).

Bri McDaniel, a 5’10” junior guard, averages 10.6 points per game; 2.4 assists; and 1.1 steals.

McDaniel is mostly a 2-point scorer: shooting an excellent 57.7% on all two-point attempts; including a scorching 50% on mid-range attempts; 67.9% at the rim within 4.5 feet; as well as 44% from further away in the paint.

McDaniel is effective shooting 45.5% on corner threes (limited attempts).

Saylor Poffenbarger, a 6’2″ junior guard, averages 10 points per game; a team-leading 8.3 rebounds; 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals; and a team-leaing 0.8 blocks.

Poffenbarger is a very effective mid-range scorer (47.8%); as well as effective shooting 46.7% on corner threes.

She is an average three-point shooter overall (29.6%); and only average converting 56.3.3% at the rim (within 4.5 feet).

To secure the victory over Maryland, the UW Huskies will need to:

(1) contain the Maryland 4-guard offense with excellent perimeter defense;

(2) contain the Terrapins dual inside-outside scoring threats, 6’0″ guard Kaylene Smikle and 6’2″ guard Shyanne Sellers, by contesting all their three-point attempts, as well as limiting their dribble penetration attempts to score in the mid-range area and at-the-rim;

(3) limit the mid-range and inside scoring of 5’10 guard Bri McDaniel by contesting her dribble penetration;

(4) limit the mid-range and corner three-pointer opportunities of 6’2″ guard Saylor Poffenbarger, as well as limiting her offensive rebounds and second chance opportunities;

(5) efficiently execute Washington’s offense to limit turnovers to 10 or less, while forcing 10 or more turnovers by Maryland; and

(6) make at least 33% of the Huskies’ three-point attempts — with at least 10 made threes.

Huskies Win Probability: 37%

This will be a difficult matchup for the Dawgs. Maryland runs a 4-guard offense that will test the Huskies ability to defend in space, as well as at the rim. Will the Washington Huskies continue to struggle against B1G conference opponents with above .500 records?
