DAWGS vs DEVILS

SERIES HISTORY

Arizona State defeated Washington at Hec Ed in the last meeting between the teams, 73 – 65; Sun Devils guard Jalyn Brown led ASU with 34 points.

Next season, Washington moves to the B1G Conference and Arizona State to the Big 12 — if, how, and when this series will continue is yet to be determined.

Arizona State Offense

The Arizona State Sun Devils offense averages 62.8 points per game; while the Huskies defense is holding opponents to 57.1 points per game.

Arizona State is an average three-point shooting team at 32.5% accuracy from beyond the arc.

Arizona State is averaging only 14.5 three-point attempts per game (Bottom 11% nationally).

Currently, the Huskies are holding opponents to (a steadily rising) 29.1% shooting from three-point range (Top 23% nationwide).

The Arizona State Sun Devils make 40.6% of their two-point attempts.

Jalyn Brown, a 6’1″” sophomore guard, is the Sun Devils primary offensive threat and Arizona State’s leading scorer at 16.3 points per game; along with 3.9 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.0 steals.

Brown is shooting an excellent 36.9% from three-point range.

Brown is not as effective at attacking the rim — she makes 55.1% of her shots within 4.5 feet of the rim (her efficiency drops to 42.0% from further out in the lane).

Jaddan Simmons is a 5’9″ guard and the second-leading scorer at 11.0 points per game.

Primarily a three-point threat, Simmons makes 34.5% of her three-point attempts.

Simmons only scores at 44.6% efficiency within 4.5 feet of the rim; and is even less efficient from farther out in the lane at 33.3%.

Trayanna Crisp, a 5’8″ guard, is Arizona’s third-leading scorer at 10.7 points per game.

Crisp is an excellent scorer from all areas of the court for the Sun Devils.

Crisp is a volume three-point shooter and makes a respectable 34% from deep.

On straightaway threes, Crisp shoots a scorching 39.0% (30 for 77).

Crisp is also efficient attacking from midrange (40.4%).

Crisp is not as efficient scoring in the lane — making 50% of her shots within 4.5 feet of the rim; and 44.7% of her shots further away in the lane.

Washington Defense

The Washington Huskies will need to disrupt the Arizona State offense by playing stifling perimeter defense on Trayanna Crisp; Jaddan Simmons and Jalyn Brown by: (1) tightly contesting their three-point shots; (2) cutting off their dribble-drive lane penetration; and (3) playing good transition defense;

The majority of Arizona State’s offense comes from inside-the-paint (46.0% – Top 27% nationally); so the Huskies must contest all shots in the and around the lane.

The Dawgs average 4.2 blocks per game — which ranks among the Top 14% of Division One schools nationally.

More generally, the Huskies defense must also dominate and control the inside by remaining active and physical on the boards.

Washington averages 25.4 defensive rebounds per game, which ranks in the Top 38 % among Division One schools nation-wide.

Meanwhile, the Sun Devils average 11.7 offensive rebounds per game, ranking in the Top 40% nationally.

Washington defenders must limit Arizona State’s second chance opportunities with strong defensive rebounding.

Washington Offense

The Huskies are currently averaging a (steady dwindling) 31.9% accuracy from three-point range.

UW has seven players shooting 30.8% or better from beyond the arc :

Jayda Noble (38.9%);

Teagan Brown (37.5%)

Chloe Briggs (35.0%);

Hannah Stines (34.1%);

Elle Ladine (33.3%);

Lauren Schwartz (30.9%); and

Sayvia Sellers(30.8%).

Washington’s offense is also very efficient from mid-range and close range, averaging 47.8% on two-pointers and 60.0% within 4.5 feet of the rim.

Overall, 52.2% of the UW Huskies made shots are the result of their 12.8 assists per game.

Prediction: Huskies Win big!

Washington have lost four games in a row and are 3-4 on the road, but will defeat the Arizona State Sun Devils by at least 10 points

GO DAWGS!
