The Washington Huskies (12-5, 2-4 PAC) suffered a 73-65 loss at home to Arizona State (9-10, 1-6 PAC) — previously winless in the Pac-12.
Poor shooting and poor defense cost the Huskies the victory on Sunday afternoon.
The Huskies shot 40% from the field overall, making 32% accuracy from three-point range, but managed only 27% on two-point attempts(13 for 27).
Washington’s defense allowed Arizona State to score 73 points (a new season-high).
Meanwhile, Arizona State guard Jalyn Brown scored 19 points in the first half and finished with 34 points — without much resistance from the the Huskies defense.
ASU shot 44.2% from the field overall, including and 38.5% from two-point range.
However, Washington’s thee-point defense was ineffective, allowing ASU to shoot a red-hot 61.5% accuracy from three-point range
Huskies defenders only forced two (2) steals versus six (6) steals by the Sun Devils.
Likewise, Washington committed 15 turnovers for the game versus only eight turnovers for ASU.
Defensive rebounds were not the expected advantage for the Huskies with Washington grabbing 22 and Arizona State grabbing 21 defensive rebounds.
1st Quarter
In the first period, UW was outscored by the Sun Devils, 15 -16.
Despite the Huskies shooting 55.6% overall and 50% from the three-point range, UW’s offense shot itself in the proverbial foot by committing seven (7) turnovers versus zero turnovers by ASU (who shot 29.4% from the field overall).
Washington was led by Hannah Stines with 7 points; Lauren Schwartz with 3 points; plus Dalayah Daniels and Elle Ladine with two each.
2nd Quarter
Arizona State outscored the Huskies, 21-18, in the second period.
Washington shot 50% overall (5 for 10) and 50% from three-point range in the second quarter — with three turnovers.
Meanwhile, ASU shot 53.3% overall and 75% from three-point range — with one turnover.
Hannah Stines led the Huskies in the second period with 6 points; followed by Elle Ladine and Dalayah Daniels with 5 points each.
The Sun Devils went into halftime with a 37-33 lead over the Huskies.
3rd Quarter
In the third period, UW edged ASU in scoring, 14-13.
Both teams struggled shooting in the third period, UW shot 31.3% from the field overall versus 41.7% by ASU.
However, ASU was in control most of the quarter and built a seven-point lead until the Huskies made an 8-2 run to cut the lead to one (48-47) with a minute left.
But a jumper by ASU guard Jalyn Brown gave ASU a 50-47 heading into the fourth quarter.
UW was led in scoring by Hannah Stines, Elle Ladine, Sayvia Sellers and Teagan Brown with 3 points each.
4th Quarter
Washington’s offense struggled mightily in the fourth quarter, the Huskies shot 10% (1 for 10) from three-point range and 35% (7 for 20) overall.
Ultimately, ASU cruised to victory, 73-65.
In the final period, Lauren Schwartz led Washington with 7 points.
