The Washington women’s basketball team will keep its season going in the WNIT, when the Huskies host San Francisco on Thursday, March 16th at 7pm.
Washington accepted an invite to play in the WNIT, which selects its field from the teams not chosen for the NCAA Tournament.
The field was announced on Sunday evening, but the bracket matchups were announced on Monday.
The first-round games will be played on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. All six rounds of the tourney are played at home sites.
Washington is the Pac-12’s automatic qualifier to the WNIT as the highest-finishing team in the regular season standings that was not selected for the NCAA Tournament.
Washington finished tied for eighth in the Pac-12 conference standings with Oregon (each with a 7-11 conference record).
The WNIT has 64 teams, double the teams of the men’s NIT. For the WNIT there are 32 automatic berths and 32 at-large berths.
Some of the teams in the WNIT this year include Arkansas, BYU, Florida, Kansas, Kansas State, Nebraska, North Dakota State, Northern Iowa, Oregon, Syracuse and Wichita State.
This is the first time in Tina Langley’s two-season tenure at UW the Huskies will play in the WNIT.
However, Coach Langley last coached in the WNIT in 2021 when she led Rice University to the NIT championship.
The Huskies last played in the WNIT in 2013-14, when they reached the WNIT Quarterfinals.
Washington (15-14) was ranked 68th in the NET (NCAA Evaluation Tool) rankings.
