Pac-12 Tourney: UW WBB Huskies Lose 1st Round to Ducks, 52-50

The No. 8 seed Washington Huskies finished the season with a first-round loss to No. 9 seed Oregon, 52-50, on Wednesday in the Pac-12 Tournament in Las Vegas.

Washington made the game interesting but faltered late.

Meanwhile, Oregon’s two starting guards dominated the Huskies defense with 41 points of the Ducks’ 52 total points — Endyia Rogers scored 28 points and Te-Hina Paopao scored 13 points.

Game Summary

1st Quarter
Oregon jumped out to an early 11-2 lead over Washington, as the Huskies started the game with very cold shooting.

The Huskies shot 28.6% overall (4 for 14) and 25% from three-point range (1 for4) in the first period.

But then, the Oregon backcourt’s offense began to warm up as the second period was winding down — as PaoPao anf Rogers combined for eight points in the final 2:32 of the second quarter.

Going into halftime, the Dawgs held a slim 2-point lead over the Ducks, 29-27.

Washington’s first half scoring leaders were Haley Van Dyke and Trinity Oliver with 7 points each; and Dalayah Daniels added 6 points.

3rd Quarter

The third quarter was a very low scoring affair for both teams, however, UW edged the Ducks, 11-9, in the third period.

Both teams struggled shooting— the Huskies shot only 28.6% overall and 0.0% from three-point range; and Oregon shot 26.7% overall and 16.7% from deep.

At the end of the third period, the Dawgs held a 4-point lead, 40-36, over the Ducks.

4th Quarter

The Huskies seemingly had victory within their reach as they led by seven points with 7:19 to go in the fourth quarter.

But Endyia Rogers took the game over in the final 4:46, as she scored 10 points against the Huskies defense.

With Paopao adding a clutch three-pointer, the Ducks staged a furious comeback to take a 51-50 lead over the Huskies with one minute and 28 seconds remaining on the clock.

Only Huskies freshman guard Hannah Stines answered UW’s call for help and provided seven points in the final three minutes — one midrange pull-up jumper; a three-pointer and a driving lefthand layup.

However, Washington’s last two shot attempts were not taken by the freshman — instead Lauren Schwartz missed an open three-pointer with 53 seconds left; and Trinity Oliver missed a highly-contested jumper in the final second of the game.

Oregon defeated the Huskies 52-50 and ended UW’s 2023 Pac-12 tournament hopes.

UW Huskies Player of the Game: Hannah Stines

As the Huskies faltered in the fourth, Hannah Stines put UW on her back and did her best to prevent Oregon from stealing the victory late in the fourth quarter.

Stines displayed nerves of steel and it really is too bad that Washington did not continue to follow her lead offensively in the final minute of the game.

For the game, Stines finished with 11 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists.
