On Sunday, March 28th, Rice University defeated the University of Mississippi 71-58 in the WNIT championship game led by head coach Tina Langley.
Persistent rumors suggest that Rice’s Tina Langley is a primary candidate for the UW WBB head coach position — if not the only candidate — signed, sealed and delivered.
Since Rice is a private university that does not need to disclose financial matters publicly, It is not known exactly how much Langley is being paid per year.
In 2020, however, Winston Gandy, a former top assistant of Langley’s, was being paid $175,000 per year by Rice.
In 2020, Gandy left the Rice program for a job with Duke University women’s basketball; and allegedly failed to make a lump sum payment to Rice within 30 days as required by his contract.
With that being said, an educated estimate is that Coach Langley was/is making approximately three times the amount of her then-coveted assistant.
That would put Langley in the salary range of $500K per year.
A number that is right smack in the upper range of Washington’s expected head coach’s salary — given that Jody Wynn was hired for approximately $400,000 per year in 2017.
Now that Rice’s women’s basketball season has ended, if Washington is pulling the trigger on the Tina Langley hire, then expect an announcement from Jen Cohen and UW Athletics early this week.
