On December 19th, the Washington Huskies Women’s basketball team lost at home to the Oregon Ducks, 73 – 49.
In a defensive effort that was mostly successful for the first three quarters, the Washington Huskies forced 13 turnovers by the Ducks.
The Huskies’ defense also held the Ducks to 28.6% shooting from three-point range.
However, Washington’s offense didn’t do its part as the Dawgs only made 27.8% of their three-point shots from two-point range and a mere 36.8% from two-point range.
Washington had 77 offensive possessions yet managed to score only 49 points in the loss; resulting in an average of only 0.636 points per possession (ppp).
In their half-court offense, Oregon only managed to score 16 points on 26.9% shooting against the Huskies’ zone defense.
On the other hand, the Ducks scored 49 points and shot 51.2% against the Huskies’ half-court player-to-player defense (man defense).
Likewise, Washington’s transition defense allowed Oregon to score 19 points on 50% shooting.
Washington had multiple outstanding individual defensive performances.
Quay Miller and Khayla Rooks held Oregon offensive players scoreless in their individual defensive matchups.
In 32 minutes of play, Quay Miller defended three (3) possessions.
Likewise, in 28 minutes of play, Rooks also defended three (3) possessions.
Darcy Rees had the highest number of possessions (13) defended for the Huskies.
Individually, Darcy Rees allowed a — somewhat misleading — 40% field goal percentage that was actually impressive due to Oregon’s concerted effort to attack the Huskies’ defense with low post play.
As a result, most of Rees’ defensive efforts where within 5 – 7 feet of the basket.
Arguably, in 32 minutes of play, Haley Van Dyke had the most impressive defensive performance by defending six (6) possessions individually, while only allowing a 16.7% field goal percentage overall.
The Huskies look to build on their overall defensive efficiency in their home matchup against Oregon State on Monday at Hec Ed.
**UPDATE** The game between Washington and Oregon State on December 21, 2020 has been canceled by Oregon State Athletics. There is no further information at this time.
