In their least impressive outing of the season, the Washington Women’s Basketball Huskies played down to their competition — keeping it close with Seattle U. until slowly wearing them down on the boards to pull away in a 80-64 blowout victory.
The Huskies mostly shot blanks from three-point range, hitting only 18.2% of their three-point attempts (4 for 22); and were only a mediocre 43.8% from the field overall (28-64).
A good measure of the offensive dysfunction was that the Huskies only managed a meager 9 team assists against the Redhawks (who had 8 assists of their own).
The Dawgs overall defense performance continued to struggle for the second straight game.
The Huskies only had 7 steals and forced a new season-low 8 turnovers from the Redhawks — UW scored a paltry 6 points off those Seattle turnovers.
The Huskies also committed 13 turnovers.
While Washington’s usually effective deep bench only contributed 11 points.
Washington had only a slim advantage scoring in the paint with a 48-38 advantage.
However, Washington’s dominance inside was the decisive factor in the game.
The single instance where the Huskies defense shined was their season-high 8 blocks against Seattle.
The Huskies were also active on the boards with 21 offensive boards, and out-rebounded the Redhawks 54 to 33 overall.
Other than (second-time starter) Sellers, the usually impressive Huskies freshman class struggled to contribute, some because of very limited playing time:
Sayvia Sellers finished with 14 points, 2 assists, 5 steals, 1 rebounds and 2 blocks in 35 minutes; Chloe Briggs with 6 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assists and 1 steal in 30 minutes; Ari Long with 0 points and 1 rebound and 1 steal in only 2(?) minutes; and Olivia Anderson with no stats in 1 minute.
1st Quarter
The Washington Huskies barely edged the Redhawks in an unexpectedly close first period, 15-13.
Washington’s leading scorers in the quarter were Lauren Schwartz with 5 points, and Elle Ladine with 4 points.
In addition to their scoring, Schwartz added 1 rebound and 1 block in 10 minutes; and Ladine added 2 rebounds, one assist and one steal.
2nd Quarter
In the second period, UW outscored Seattle by six points, 21-15.
UW was led by Elle Ladine with 6 points and 6 rebounds in 7 minutes; and Hanna Stines added with 5 points, 2 rebounds and one block in 10 minutes.
At the half, the Dawgs led 36-28 over the Redhawks.
3rd Quarter
In a closely competitive third period, Washington outscored Seattle by four points, 23-17.
Dalayah Daniels came out charged up from halftime and delivered 8 points, 3 rebounds and one steal in 6 minutes of play.
Lauren Schwartz contributed 5 points, 32 rebounds and one steal in 6 minutes.
The Dawgs ended the third quarter with a 59-45 lead.
4th Quarter
In a tightly contested final period, the Huskies outscored Seattle by only two points, 21-19.
The teams battled on the boards, grabbing 13 rebounds each.
In the fourth quarter Washington was led by Sayvia Sellers’ 8 points, two assist and one block in 10 minutes.
Ladine added 6 points (on perfect shooting, 1 of 1 from the field and 4 for 4 from the free throw line) and two rebounds in 5 minutes of play.
The final result was a blowout victory over the Redhawks, 81-64, but it was much more competitive than the final score suggests.
UW WBB Player of the Game: Elle Ladine
Elle Ladine had a her first double-double as a Husky.
Let’s repeat that… “Elle Ladine had a freaking double-double!“
Ladine scored 18 points (5-12 overall; 0 for 2 from three; and a perfect 8 for 8 from the free throw line); and she grabbed 12 rebounds (7 defensive/5 offensive) in only 23 minutes.
A “quiet” double double, while playing half the game, should not be overlooked– Ladine was highly efficient and got everything within the flow of the game.
Elle Ladine has certainly reached another level as a an all-around player and that is the biggest positive takeaway from this otherwise lackluster Huskies victory.
