On Monday afternoon in the Bahamas, the Washington Huskies (6-2) gave the undefeated #7-ranked LSU Tigers (7-0) an upset scare before UW lost in the final seconds, 67-68.
Offensively, the Huskies shooting was average — making 44% from the field overall (26 for 59); and only 30% from three-point range.
However, the Dawgs held the Tigers to 33% (25 for 76) from the field overall and 16% (3 for 19) from three-point range.
1st Quarter
In the first period, Washington was led by Sayvia Sellers with nine points; Hannah Stines and Dalayah Daniels with five points each; Elle Ladine with three points; and Tayra Eke added two points.
In the first quarter, the hot-shooting Huskies made 52.9% of their shots from the field overall (9 of 17) and 42.9% (3 for 7) from three-point range.
Meanwhile, the Tigers struggled from the field, shooting 29.4% overall (5 for 17) and 0% (0 for 5) from three-point range.
The Huskies held a 13-point lead to end the first period, 24-11.
2nd Quarter
In the second period, the Washington Huskies cooled off significantly — shooting 33.3% (5 for 15) from the field overall; and 25% (2 for 8) from three-point range.
Yet the Tigers continued to struggle to score against Huskies defenders, LSU misfired to the tune of 28.6% (6 for 21) shooting from the field overall — but managed a respectable 33% (2 for 6) from three-point range.
The Huskies were led by Tayra Eke with four points; Sayvia Sellers and Hannah Stines with three points; and Elle Ladine added two points.
LSU outscored UW 18-12 in the second period, but the Huskies held a 10-point lead heading into halftime, 36-26.
3rd Quarter
In the third quarter, LSU started to make its move to get back into the game and cut the deficit by outscoring the Huskies, 22-16.
LSU shot 46.7% (7 for 15) from the field overall and only 20% (1 for 5) from three-point range.
The Huskies shot 43.8% (7 for 16) from the field overall and made 33% (2 for 6) from three-point range.
Washington was led in scoring by Sayvia Sellers with nine points; Elle Ladine with five points; and Dalayah Daniels added two points.
The Huskies held on with a 4-point lead heading into the final period, 52-48.
4th Quarter
In the final period, LSU and the Huskies traded baskets as the UW held tightly to a slim lead.
Sayvia Sellers made a three-pointer to put the Huskies back ahead by five points.
LSU’s Flau’Jae Johnson scored five straight points to cut UW’s six-point lead down to a one-point lead with 44 seconds left in the game.
Washington failed to score down the stretch as LSU guard Kailyn Gilbert made the game-winning layup with only one second left in the game.
Although the Dawgs had a chance for a last-second shot, LSU stole UW’s halfcourt inbound pass to secure the victory and avoid the upset.
In the fourth period, Washington was led by Elle Ladine and Hannah Stines with four points each; Sayviah Sellers added three points; with Dalayah Daniels and Tayra Eke adding two points each.
UW Player of the Game: Sayvia Sellers
In 31 minutes of playing time, Sayvia Sellers led the Huskies with 24 points by shooting 50% from three-point range (4 for 8); and making 50% of her shots overall (9 for 18).
Sayvia also recorded a team-leading 4 rebounds, and 2 steals with one block and one assist.
