RECAP: In Defensive Battle, UW WBB Huskies Lose to Arizona, 58-50

On Wednesday night, in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, the Washington Huskies (16-14, 6-12 PAC) lost, 58-50, to Arizona (17-14, 8-10 PAC).

A low-scoring defensive battle throughout the game, the Huskies failed to score any field goals in the last four minutes and one second of the game — thus, Arizona secured a 58-50 victory.

The loss eliminated the Huskies from the final Pac-12 WBB Tournament and eliminated their (longshot) chance of a NCAA play-in bid.

Ultimately, the Huskies shot an abysmal 38.8% (19 for 49) from the field overall, and 26.7% from three-point range (4 for 15).

Meanwhile, Arizona also struggled offensively: shooting 41.4% (24 for 58) from the field, and 20% from three-point range (2 for 10).

1st Quarter

In the first quarter, Washington got off to a good start offensively, shooting 50% overall (6 for 12) and 40% (2 for 5) from three-point range.

Arizona shot 46.7% (7 for 15) overall and only 25% (1 for 4) from three-point range.

In the first period, Washington was led by Sayvia Sellers with 5 points; Dalayah Daniels with 4 points; Hannah Stines added three (3) points; and Elle Ladine with two points.

Lauren Schwartz was scoreless (0 for 2 from three-point range), as the Arizona defense concentrated on preventing her scoring opportunities. This would be a continuing theme of the game.

Both teams had four turnovers which was a testimony to the defensive intensity with which the game began.

Arizona had three steals versus two by the Huskies; however, the Huskies recorded four blocks to zero by Arizona.

At the end of the first quarter, Arizona held a slim 1-point lead over the Huskies, 15-14.

2nd Quarter

Throughout the second period, the game remained a tight contest as both teams’ defensive intensity continued at a frenzied pace.

Washington catalyst Jayda Noble came off the bench and recorded her 100th career steal — scoring a transition layup off an assist by Sellers.

Arizona recorded eight (8) rebounds versus only four (4) rebounds by the Huskies.

The Huskies were led by Elle Ladine with six (6) points; Lauren Schwarz with 3 points (1 for 1) with zero three-point attempts; Jayda Noble and Sayvia Sellers added two (2) points each to round out the scoring.

The Huskies went into halftime trailing Arizona, 29-27, as the Wildcats edged UW in scoring for the period, 14 to 13.

3rd Quarter

In the third period, Arizona outscored the Huskies, 14 to 9 — a crucial offensive surge in a low-scoring contest.

Washington shot 30.8% (4 for 13) from the field and 25% (1 for 4) from deep.

Arizona shot 43.8% (7 for 16) from the field overall and 0% (0 for 1) from three-point range, as Arizona began to focus on pounding the ball inside the lane on offense.

Washington had more rebounds (10) than Arizona (8); however, UW had five turnovers in the third period versus two turnovers by Arizona.

UW was led in scoring by Dalayah Daniels with four (4) points, Chloe Briggs added three (3) points and Hannah Stines added two (2) points.

Again, Lauren Schwartz went scoreless for the period (0 for 2) with zero three-point attempts.

Heading into the 4th quarter, Washington trailed Arizona by a 7-point margin, 43-36.

4th Quarter

In the fourth period, Arizona opened up the biggest lead of the game, going up by 11 points with a little more than five (5) minutes left.

Lauren Schwartz suddenly sparked a 9-0 Washington scoring run with a three-pointer and deep two that brought the Huskies within six points, 50-44, with 4 minutes and 45 seconds remaining.

Then the Huskies seemingly ran out of gas, as UW failed to score a field goal for the last 4 minutes and one second of the game –Schwartz had no shot attempts until a desperation three-pointer with 8 seconds left, which was blocked.

The Huskies only offense down the stretch consisted of four (4) made free throws, two each by Elle Ladine and Dalayah Daniels.

Arizona cruised to victory in the final minutes, 58-50.

UW shot 28.6% (4 for 14) from the field overall and 25% (1 for 4) from three-point range.

Meanwhile, Arizona only shot 28.6% overall (4 for 14); and 50% (1 for 2) from three-point range.

In the fourth period, Lauren Schwartz and Dalayah Daniels led UW with five points each; Sayvia Sellers and Elle Ladine added two (2) points each to roun out the scoring.

UW WBB Player of the Game: Dalayah Daniels

Dalayah Daniels was noticeably aggressive early in the game and ultimately recorded 13 points, 10 rebounds, three (3) blocks, two (2) steals and two (2) assists — impressively well-balanced production that gives a glimpse at what Daniels is capable of on a nightly basis.

(If Daniels could average that stat line, she would be an All-American candidate and the Huskies would be going to the NCAA tournament.)

Next Up – Post Season?

The Washington Huskies wait to see if they will be extended an invite to the NIT post-season tournament.

GO DAWGS!
