On Friday night, the Washington Huskies (13-9 overall; 3-8 PAC) used a late second half surge to send their contest with Stanford (21-3, 10-2 PAC ) into overtime, but fell short of a huge upset, 63-59.
The Huskies dug themselves a huge hole to start the game by shooting 9% overall (2 for 21) — and trailing 20-5 in the second period — before going on an 11-2 scoring run to get back in the game by halftime, 22-16.
For the game, the Huskies struggled offensively: shooting 32.8% overall (22 for 67) ; including, 35.5% on two-point attempts (11 for 36); 42.9.7% at the rim (within 4.5 feet) and 0% from farther out in the lane (0 for 6).
The Dawgs were competent shooting from three-point range (30.6%; 11 for 36) and from midrange (41.2 % ; 7 for 17).
Stanford’s offense exploited the Huskies in the midrange (66.7% shooting) and at-the-rim (76.9% within 4.5 feet).
Overall, Washington defenders held the Cardinal offense to below average efficiency from three-point range with 30.4% accuracy (7 for 23); but at key late game moments lost contact with Stanford’s three-point shooters (particularly in the corners).
The Huskies were out-rebounded by the Cardinal, 33-40.
Washington did commit less turnovers than Stanford (14 to 18) which kept Washington within striking distance until the final buzzer.
1st Quarter
In the first period, the Huskies offense struggled mightily — scoring 5 points — and the outcome of the game looked grim, even though Stanford only scored 11 points.
The Huskies were led by Elle Ladine (3 points) and Lauren Schwartz (2 points).
Alarmingly, the Huskies shot 14.3% overall (2 for 14) in the first quarter and 20% from three-point range (1 for 5).
2nd Quarter
In the second period, however, the Huskies offense matched the Cardinal offense, as both teams scored 11 points.
Washington only shot 28.6% overall from the field, but a much improved 37.5% from three-point range.
Stanford’s offense shot 41.7% overall but was held to 20% (1 for 5) from three-point range.
Lauren Schwartz contributed only 3 points from deep, but her three-pointer sparked an 11-2 scoring run that got the Huskies back in the game.
Sharp-shooting Hannah Stines led the Huskies with 6 points on a perfect 2 for 2 from three-point range; and Elle Ladine added two points.

At halftime, Stanford held a slim 6-point lead over the Huskies, 22-16.
3rd Quarter
In the third quarter, the Cardinal edged the Huskies in scoring, 19-17.
UW shot 43.8% overall; 25.0% from three-point range and committed three turnovers.
Washington was led in scoring by Sayvia Sellers with 8 points, 2 rebounds, one assist and one steal; and Hannah Stines with 6 points.

Stanford held on to a eight-point lead, 41-33, heading into the fourth quarter.
4th Quarter
In the fourth period, UW outscored Stanford 17 to 9, as the Huskies scored 11 points off Stanford’s seven (7) turnovers.

UW shot 33% from three-point range (4 for 12), but only 37.5% overall (6 for 16).
A steal by Sayvia Sellers led to a quick assist by Jayda Noble to Lauren Schwartz for a three-pointer that tied the Dawgs with the Cardinal at 50 a piece.

In the fourth quarter, Dalayah Daniels led the Huskies in scoring with five (5) points, three (3) rebounds and two (2) steals; Lauren Schwartz with 4 points; Jayda Noble and Hannah Stines with three points each; and Elle Ladine with two points.
OVERTIME
The Huskies struggled to keep up with Stanford in overtime — UW shooting 42.9% overall (3 for 7) versus 66.7% shooting (6 for 9) by Stanford.
Stanford dominated the Huskies inside with 8 points-in-the-paint versus zero for the Huskies.
Washington eventually lost to Stanford, 63-59.
